How do I view Arlo videos saved on local storage?

Arlo video recordings can be stored using Arlo cloud storage, or you can set up local storage on your Arlo SmartHub or Arlo Base Station. Local storage can be used by itself or as a second backup location to store recordings. You can also set up local storage on Arlo Go 2 and Arlo Q Plus cameras with a MicroSD card.

Note: Only motion or audio triggered recordings are saved locally to the connected local storage device. Manual recordings are only saved to the cloud.

If you need to set up local storage on your Arlo SmartHub or Arlo Base Station for the first time, visit: How do I set up local storage backups using my Arlo SmartHub or Base Station?

Note: (VMB4000 and VMB4500 Base Stations) You must remove the USB device from the Arlo Base Station to view videos saved in local storage. There is an option to set up a second USB device for local storage recording if you do not want to interrupt local recording on VMB4000 and VMB4500 Base Stations while you view videos.

To view Arlo videos saved on a local storage:

  1. Launch the Arlo Secure App.
  2. Tap Devices.
  3. Select the Arlo SmartHub, Arlo Base Station, or Arlo Camera where the storage device is in use.
  4. Tap for Arlo Cameras or skip to the next step for Arlo SmartHubs and Arlo Base Stations.
  5. Tap Storage Settings.
Note: If the mobile device you're using is connected to the same network as your Arlo SmartHub or Base Station, you will be able to view your videos through the Arlo Secure App. If you want to view your videos using your computer, proceed to step 6.
  6. Tap Local Storage Settings.
Note: Connected USB devices are numbered in the order that they are inserted into the Arlo Base Station. If USB devices are not already named, the first device inserted is named USB Device 1 and the second one is named USB Device 2. The numbers do not necessarily match the port numbers on the Arlo Base Station.
  7. Tap Safely Eject Local Storage.
  8. Tap Eject.
  9. If displayed, wait for the unmounting device message to close, then remove the local storage device from your Arlo SmartHub or Arlo Base Station.
Note: If a second USB device is still connected to your Arlo Base Station and local recording is turned on, recording will be automatically enabled on the remaining USB device.
  10. Insert USB devices into a USB port on your computer and insert microSD cards into an SD card reader.
  11. Wait for the storage device to appear in the available drives on your computer, then open the drive folder to view the files.
  12. Open the Arlo folder.
Recorded videos are saved in MP4 format.
Video files are named as follows: camera serial number_video number_date_video clip tag.
Dates are in the format YYYYMMDD.
Note: If you are unable to play MP4 files on your computer, update your media player software to the latest version and try again. You can also download a free universal multimedia player, such as VLC.
